A survey for infrared excesses among high galactic latitude SAO stars This project involves extending the previous analysis of infraredexcesses among a volume-limited sample of 134 nearby A-K main-sequencestars to a magnitude-limited sample of stars, culled from the SAOCatalog, with excesses determined from the IRAS Point Source Catalogflux density ratios. This new sample includes 5706 B-M type stars, 379of which have infrared excesses. The objective involved use of astatistically complete survey of objects in a standard catalog in orderto assess the frequency with which different physical processes canaffect the infrared output of stars. These processes include, but arenot limited to, orbiting cold particle clouds and the onset of rapidmass loss. It is concluded that cold disks are consistent with theinfrared excesses found among A-G dwarfs and G-K giants in the sample.
| UBVRI photometry of FKSZ stars. III UBVRI photometry in the Kron-Cousins system is presented for 118 starsin the Catalogue of Fundamental Faint Stars (Zverev, 1957) in thedeclination zone between -60 and -90 degrees. The observations were madebetween September, 1984 and March, 1987 at the European SouthernObservatory at La Silla, Chile. Tables of the photometric data aregiven, including star number, V magnitude, spectral types, and (B-V),(U-B), (V-R), and (R-I) color indices.
| The infrared universe revealed by IRAS Some of the astrophysical phenomena revealed by IRAS are reviewed. Therelation of IRAS data to understanding the origin of the interplanetarydust cloud, to the discovery of protoplanetary disks around other stars,to understanding the birth and death of stars, and to comprehending theenergetics of the interstellar medium are addressed. Extragalacticresults suggesting that IRAS may have found the birthplace of quasarsare examined, and the surprising cosmological implications of the IRAScatalog are considered.
| Five-colour photometry of early-type stars in the direction of galactic X-ray sources The results of five-color (Walraven system) photometry of 551 O- andB-type stars located in 17 fields of a few square degrees aroundgalactic X-ray sources are presented. From a comparison ofreddening-free combinations of color indices with theoretical values,calculated for model atmospheres of Kurucz (1979), effective temperatureand surface gravity for these stars are derived. In addition theirabsolute magnitude are determined by combining these parameters with theresults of evolutionary calculations of massive stars. These effectivetemperatures are in good agreement with the temperature scale ofBohm-Vitense (1981) for stars of luminosity classes II to V. For thesupergiants the effective temperatures are about 40 percent higher. Forstars of luminosity classes III to V the absolute magnitudes agree wellwith the results of independent luminosity calibrations of spectraltypes, but for brighter stars they deviate systematically. Thephotometric data are also used to study the interstellar reddening inthe direction of the X-ray sources.
| Evidence of helium abundance differences between young groups of stars Seven groups of B-type stars - Sco-Cen, NGC 6231, LacOBI,OriOBIb, h + chi Per, CepOBIII, and field stars - wereinvestigated photoelectrically to determine whether helium abundance isuniform in the solar neighborhood and in a region of the spiral arm ofthe Galaxy. Observations were performed using an echelle spectrometer inthe narrow band index of the I (4026) of the He I-4026 line. Amodel-atmosphere analysis of I (4026) and the beta index of the H betaline shows that in the spectral range B O-B 2, the relation between I(4026) and beta is insensitive to differences in the surface gravity butsensitive to differences in the helium to hydrogen ratio. It is foundthat stars in the two groups most distant from the sun - h + chi Per andCepOBIII - have a lower helium abundance than stars in the solarneighborhood.
