Long term photometric monitoring with the Mercator telescope. Frequencies and mode identification of variable O-B stars Aims. We selected a large sample of O-B stars that were considered as(candidate) slowly pulsating B, β Cep, and Maia stars after theanalysis of their hipparcos data. We analysed our new seven passbandgeneva data collected for these stars during the first three years ofscientific operations of the mercator telescope. We performed afrequency analysis for 28 targets with more than 50 high-qualitymeasurements to improve their variability classification. For thepulsating stars, we tried both to identify the modes and to search forrotationally split modes. Methods: . We searched for frequenciesin all the geneva passbands and colours by using two independentfrequency analysis methods and we applied a 3.6 S/N-level criterion tolocate the significant peaks in the periodograms. The modes wereidentified by applying the method of photometric amplitudes for which wecalculated a large, homogeneous grid of equilibrium models to perform apulsational stability analysis. When both the radius and the projectedrotational velocity of an object are known, we determined a lower limitfor the rotation frequency to estimate the expected frequency spacingsin rotationally split pulsation modes. Results: . We detected 61frequencies, among which 33 are new. We classified 21 objects aspulsating variables (7 new confirmed pulsating stars, including 2 hybridβ Cep/SPB stars), 6 as non-pulsating variables (binaries or spottedstars), and 1 as photometrically constant. All the Maia candidates werereclassified into other variability classes. We performed modeidentification for the pulsating variables for the first time. The mostprobable ℓ value is 0, 1, 2, and 4 for 1, 31, 9, and 5 modes, respectively, including only 4 unambiguous identifications. For 7 starswe cannot rule out that some of the observed frequencies belong to thesame rotationally split mode. For 4 targets we may begin to resolveclose frequency multiplets. Based on observations collected with the p7 photometer attached to theFlemish 1.2-m mercator telescope situated at the Roque de los Muchachosobservatory on La Palma (Spain). | Observations of Star-Forming Regions with the Midcourse Space Experiment We have imaged seven nearby star-forming regions, the Rosette Nebula, the Orion Nebula, W3, the Pleiades, G300.2-16.8, S263, and G159.6-18.5,with the Spatial Infrared Imaging Telescope on the Midcourse SpaceExperiment (MSX) satellite at 18" resolution at 8.3, 12.1, 14.7, and21.3 μm. The large angular scale of the regions imaged (~7.2-50deg2) makes these data unique in terms of the combination ofsize and resolution. In addition to the star-forming regions, twocirrus-free fields (MSXBG 160 and MSXBG 161) and a field near the southGalactic pole (MSXBG 239) were also imaged. Point sources have beenextracted from each region, resulting in the identification over 500 newsources (i.e., no identified counterparts at other wavelengths), as wellas over 1300 with prior identifications. The extended emission from thestar-forming regions is described, and prominent structures areidentified, particularly in W3 and Orion. The Rosette Nebula isdiscussed in detail. The bulk of the mid-infrared emission is consistentwith that of photon-dominated regions, including the elephant trunkcomplex. The central clump, however, and a line of site toward thenorthern edge of the cavity show significantly redder colors than therest of the Rosette complex.
| BVR Photometry of Northern Hemisphere Luminous Stars. III. LS and HD Stars CCD-based BVR photometry of 48 previously unobserved stars drawn fromvolumes V and VI of the Luminous Stars in the Northern Milky Way,Luminous Stars in the Southern Milky Way, and HD catalogs is reported.
| Radial velocities. Measurements of 2800 B2-F5 stars for HIPPARCOS Radial velocities have been determined for a sample of 2930 B2-F5 stars,95% observed by the Hipparcos satellite in the north hemisphere and 80%without reliable radial velocity up to now. Observations were obtainedat the Observatoire de Haute Provence with a dispersion of 80Ä,mm(-1) with the aim of studying stellar and galactic dynamics.Radial velocities have been measured by correlation with templates ofthe same spectral class. The mean obtained precision is 3.0 km s(-1)with three observations. A new MK spectral classification is estimatedfor all stars. Based on observations made at the Haute ProvenceObservatory, France and on data from The Hipparcos Catalogue, ESA.Tables 4, 5 and 6 are only available in electronic form at the CDS viaanonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.htm
| The 74th Special Name-list of Variable Stars We present the Name-list introducing GCVS names for 3153 variable starsdiscovered by the Hipparcos mission.
| Study of an unbiased sample of B stars observed with Hipparcos: the discovery of a large amount of new slowly pulsating B stars We present a classification of 267 new variable B-type stars discoveredby Hipparcos. We have used two different classification schemes and theyboth result in only a few new beta Cephei stars, a huge number of newslowly pulsating B stars, quite some supergiants with alpha Cyg-typevariations and variable CP stars, and further some new periodic Be starsand eclipsing binaries. Our results clearly point out the biased naturetowards short-period variables of earlier, ground-based surveys ofvariable stars. The position of the new beta Cephei stars and slowlypulsating B stars in the HR diagram is determined by means of Genevaphotometry and is confronted with the most recent calculations of theinstability strips for both groups of variables. We find that the newbeta Cephei stars are situated in the blue part of the instability stripand that the new slowly pulsating B stars almost fully cover thetheoretical instability domain determined for such stars. Thesupergiants with alpha Cyg-type variations are situated between theinstability strips of the beta Cephei and the slowly pulsating B starson the one hand and previously known supergiants that exhibitmicrovariations on the other hand. This suggests some connection betweenthe variability caused by the kappa mechanism acting in a zone ofpartially ionised metals and the unknown cause of the variations insupergiants.
| Radial velocity measurements. I - Ground-based observations of the program stars for the HIPPARCOS satellite The radial velocities of 272 stars brighter than m(pg) = 8.5 aredetermined by digital microphotometric measurement of plates obtainedwith dispersion 80 A/mm using the Marly slit spectrograph on the 120-cmtelescope of the Observatoire de Haute Provence. The objects wereselected as probable members of the input catalog for the ESA Hipparcosastrometric satellite. The measurement techniques and data-reductionprocedures are described in detail, and the results are presented inextensive tables and graphs and briefly characterized.
| Four-colour and H-beta photometry of blue stars selected from a balloon-ultraviolet survey and other sources New uvby and/or H-beta photometry is obtained at the Chiranhigh-altitude outstation for 105 stars. Certain of the program stars areselected from a comparison of the SCAP 2000 balloon-ultraviolet skysurvey of the Laboratoire d'Astronomie Spatiale with the correspondingblue and red prints of the Palomar Observatory sky survey. Only a smallportion of these stars turn out to be B stars, whereas, the rest of thestars, which are selected from a variety of other sources, are mostly Bstars and if of normal luminosity are in many cases many Population Iscale heights from the galactic plane. It is shown that theidentification of B stars is practicable only at a good observing siteand that if H-beta photometry is also obtained, sdOB, sdB, and hothorizontal branch B stars can be distinguished from normal stars bytheir position in the beta/c(0) diagram.

| Four-colour photometry of B stars north of B = + 45 deg and comparison with the south Four-color photometry of 33 Henry Draper B stars north of b = + 45 degis presented. Most are little-reddened B or intermediate-A stars. A newAm star is discovered. The new measures essentially complete uvbyphotometry of all HD B stars within 45 deg of either galactic pole. Thenorthern and southern cones of HD B stars are compared, and selectioneffects deduced. Far from the galactic plane, it appears that B starsmay be equally distributed north and south of the plane; closer to thesun, an asymmetry associated with Gould's Belt is evident.
