An accurate determination of the distance to the Pipe nebula Aims.We seek an accurate distance to the Pipe nebula. Methods: TheB-band linear polarimetry collected for stars from the Hipparcoscatalogue is used to investigate the dependence of the measuredinterstellar polarization as a function of the star's trigonometricparallax. Results: The linear polarization obtained for 82 Hipparcosstars in the general direction of the Pipe nebula are presented andanalysed. The distribution of the obtained position angles suggests theexistence of two polarizing components. One of them has low averagecolumn density and seems to be closer than ~70 pc to the Sun, while theother component has a higher column density and seems to belong to avery extended interstellar structure. The obtained parallax-polarizationdiagram indicates a low degree of polarization for stars withπH > 8 mas, while a steep rise in polarization isobserved for stars with πH ≈ 7 mas, corresponding to adistance of approximately 140 pc. Conclusions: Our analysis suggests adistance of 145 ± 16 pc to de Pipe nebula, meaning that thiscloud is part of the Ophiuchus dark cloud complex. There is evidencethat the largest filament of the Pipe nebula has collapsed along themagnetic field lines, indicating that magnetic pressure plays animportant role in the evolution of this cloud.Based on observations collected at Observatório do Pico dos Dias,operated by Laboratório Nacional de Astrofísica (LNA/MCT,Brazil). | Far-ultraviolet stellar photometry: Fields in Sagittarius and Scorpius Far-ultraviolet photometry for 741 objects in a field in Sagittariuscentered near M8 and 541 objects in a field centered near sigma Scorpiiis presented. These data were extracted from electographic imagesobtained with two cameras during a shuttle flight in 1991 April/May. Thecameras provided band passes with lambdaeff = 1375 A andlambdaeff = 1781 A. Synthetic colors show that these bandsare sensitive to effective temperature for hot stars. Our measurementswere placed on a quantitative far-ultraviolet magnitude scale byconvolving the spectra of stars observed by IUE with our cameras'spectral response functions. Fifty-eight percent of the ultravioletobjects were identified with visible stars using the SIMBAD databasewhile another 40% of the objects are blends of early type stars tooclose together to separate with our resolution. Our photometry iscompared with that from the TD-1, OAO 2, and ANS satellites and the S201(Apollo 16) far-ultraviolet camera and found to agree at the level of afew tenths of a magnitude. Unlike previous studies, almost half of theidentified visual counterparts to the ultraviolet objects are early Bstars. A plot of distance modulus against ultraviolet color excessreveals a significant population of stars with strong ultravioletexcess.
| Walraven photometry of nearby southern OB associations Homogeneous Walraven (VBLUW) photometry is presented for 5260 stars inthe regions of five nearby southern OB associations: Scorpio Centaurus(Sco OB2), Orion OB1, Canis Major OB1, Monoceros OB1, and Scutum OB2.Derived V and (B - V) in the Johnson system are included.
| Visual multiples. VIII - 1000 MK types A total of 1000 new classifications are given for stars brighter than B= 8.0 mag in the Aitken double star catalog. The classificationssupplement 865 classifications obtained in 1981 and 1984. Among thenewly discovered stars are 12 new Ap stars, eight Lambda Bootis stars,one Ba II star, and 60 Am stars. A detailed list of the newclassifications is given.
| A study of visual double stars with early type primaries. IV Astrophysical data Astrophysical parameters (MK class, color excess, absolute magnitude,distance, effective temperature, mass, and age) are derived fromcalibrations of the uvby-beta indices for the members of 253 doublestars with O or B type primaries and faint secondaries. The photometricspectral classification is compared to the MK classes, and the agreementis very good. The derived data together with spectroscopic and JHKL dataare used for deciding which pairs are likely to be physical and whichare optical, and it is shown that 98 (34 percent) of the secondaries arelikely to be members of physical systems. For 90 percent of the physicalpairs the projected separation between the components is less than25,000 AU. A majority of the physical secondaries are late-type stars,and 50 percent of them are contracting towards the zero-agemain-sequence. Also presented are new uvby-beta data for 43 secondariesand a computer program for determining astrophysical parameters fromuvby-beta data.

| A study of visual double stars with early type primaries. I - Spectroscopic results Attention is given to spectral peculiarities found in data on thespectral classes of 486 stars in 254 visual doublet or multiplet systemswith O or B type primaries, in order to isolate a group of very youngstars that may serve for the study of early stellar evolutioncharacteristics. It is noted that the material contains a substantialfraction of secondaries that are likely to be physical, and that severalof these may be in the premain-sequence phase of stellar evolution, orhave reached the zero-age main sequence.
| A photometric catalogue of stars in the direction of the bright cloud B in Sagittarius The present catalog includes photometric data on stars in a 5.5 deg x5.5 deg area in the direction of the bright cloud B in Sagittarius,centered at l equals 357.7 deg, b equals plus 5.6 deg. V magnitudes andB-V and U-B colors are reported for nearly all HD and HDE stars in thefield and also for a number of interesting stars (402 stars), 21 propermotion stars, and 45 stars in a 15 arcmin radius circular regioncentered on the galactic cluster Trumpler 26 (Tr 26). Furthermore,photographic B, V, R, and IR magnitudes are listed for 274 stars in thefield of Tr 26. These data will be used for further studies ofinterstellar absorption in the Galaxy's central direction in relation tospecific objects (red variable stars, star clusters, diffuse objects).
