The Geneva-Copenhagen survey of the Solar neighbourhood. Ages, metallicities, and kinematic properties of 14 000 F and G dwarfs We present and discuss new determinations of metallicity, rotation, age,kinematics, and Galactic orbits for a complete, magnitude-limited, andkinematically unbiased sample of 16 682 nearby F and G dwarf stars. Our63 000 new, accurate radial-velocity observations for nearly 13 500stars allow identification of most of the binary stars in the sampleand, together with published uvbyβ photometry, Hipparcosparallaxes, Tycho-2 proper motions, and a few earlier radial velocities,complete the kinematic information for 14 139 stars. These high-qualityvelocity data are supplemented by effective temperatures andmetallicities newly derived from recent and/or revised calibrations. Theremaining stars either lack Hipparcos data or have fast rotation. Amajor effort has been devoted to the determination of new isochrone agesfor all stars for which this is possible. Particular attention has beengiven to a realistic treatment of statistical biases and errorestimates, as standard techniques tend to underestimate these effectsand introduce spurious features in the age distributions. Our ages agreewell with those by Edvardsson et al. (\cite{edv93}), despite severalastrophysical and computational improvements since then. We demonstrate,however, how strong observational and theoretical biases cause thedistribution of the observed ages to be very different from that of thetrue age distribution of the sample. Among the many basic relations ofthe Galactic disk that can be reinvestigated from the data presentedhere, we revisit the metallicity distribution of the G dwarfs and theage-metallicity, age-velocity, and metallicity-velocity relations of theSolar neighbourhood. Our first results confirm the lack of metal-poor Gdwarfs relative to closed-box model predictions (the ``G dwarfproblem''), the existence of radial metallicity gradients in the disk,the small change in mean metallicity of the thin disk since itsformation and the substantial scatter in metallicity at all ages, andthe continuing kinematic heating of the thin disk with an efficiencyconsistent with that expected for a combination of spiral arms and giantmolecular clouds. Distinct features in the distribution of the Vcomponent of the space motion are extended in age and metallicity,corresponding to the effects of stochastic spiral waves rather thanclassical moving groups, and may complicate the identification ofthick-disk stars from kinematic criteria. | Rotational velocities of A-type stars in the northern hemisphere. II. Measurement of v sin i This work is the second part of the set of measurements of v sin i forA-type stars, begun by Royer et al. (\cite{Ror_02a}). Spectra of 249 B8to F2-type stars brighter than V=7 have been collected at Observatoirede Haute-Provence (OHP). Fourier transforms of several line profiles inthe range 4200-4600 Å are used to derive v sin i from thefrequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis of the sampleindicates that measurement error mainly depends on v sin i and thisrelative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 5% onaverage. The systematic shift with respect to standard values fromSlettebak et al. (\cite{Slk_75}), previously found in the first paper,is here confirmed. Comparisons with data from the literature agree withour findings: v sin i values from Slettebak et al. are underestimatedand the relation between both scales follows a linear law ensuremath vsin inew = 1.03 v sin iold+7.7. Finally, thesedata are combined with those from the previous paper (Royer et al.\cite{Ror_02a}), together with the catalogue of Abt & Morrell(\cite{AbtMol95}). | Speckle Interferometry of New and Problem Hipparcos Binaries. II. Observations Obtained in 1998-1999 from McDonald Observatory The Hipparcos satellite made measurements of over 9734 known doublestars, 3406 new double stars, and 11,687 unresolved but possible doublestars. The high angular resolution afforded by speckle interferometrymakes it an efficient means to confirm these systems from the ground,which were first discovered from space. Because of its coverage of adifferent region of angular separation-magnitude difference(ρ-Δm) space, speckle interferometry also holds promise toascertain the duplicity of the unresolved Hipparcos ``problem'' stars.Presented are observations of 116 new Hipparcos double stars and 469Hipparcos ``problem stars,'' as well as 238 measures of other doublestars and 246 other high-quality nondetections. Included in these areobservations of double stars listed in the Tycho-2 Catalogue andpossible grid stars for the Space Interferometry Mission.

| Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue. We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.
| Stroemgren photometry of F- and G-type stars brighter than V = 9.6. I. UVBY photometry Within the framework of a large photometric observing program, designedto investigate the Galaxy's structure and evolution, Hβ photometryis being made for about 9000 stars. As a by-product, supplementary uvbyphotometry has been made. The results are presented in a cataloguecontaining 6924 uvby observations of 6190 stars, all south ofδ=+38deg. The overall internal rms errors of one observation(transformed to the standard system) of a program star in the interval6.5
| A photometric and spectroscopic search for luminous high latitude stars Formulas, derived by Arellano Ferro and Mendoza in Paper I (1993), tocalculate Mv, log g, and (Fe/H) were applied to a group of 73A, F, and G stars of high galactic latitude previously classified assupergiant stars. The only star that showed, from data on hand, to beluminous, slightly iron deficient, and out of the galactic plane was BLTelescopii. The remainder of the sample either present controversialresults or are definitively giant or dwarf stars misclassified assupergiants. Thus, if luminous, young stars indeed exist out of thegalactic plane, they are extremely rare.
| The early F-type stars - Refined classification, confrontation with Stromgren photometry, and the effects of rotation The classification for early F-type stars in the MK spectralclassification system presented by Gray and Garrison (1987) is refined.The effect of rotation on spectral classification and ubvy-betaphotometry of early F-type stars is examined. It is found that theclassical luminosity criterion, the 4417 A/4481 A ratio givesinconsistent results. It is shown that most of the stars in the DeltaDelphini class of metallic-line stars are either normal or areindistinguishable from proto-Am stars. It is suggested that thedesignation Delta Delphini should be dropped. The classifications arecompared with Stromgren photometry. The effects of rotation on thedelta-c1 index in the early-F field dwarfs is demonstrated.
| The extension of the MK spectral classification system to the intermediate population II F type stars A grid of metal-weak spectral-classification standards is used tosystematically extend the MK spectral-classification system to F-typestars of the intermediate population II. The present method allowsmetal-weak program stars to be compared with standards of similarmetallicity and effective temperature. The results demonstrate that theintermediate population II is very homogeneous. Excellent agreement isobtained between the classifications of the present extended system anduvby-beta photometric results.
| Walraven VBLUW photometry in Basel halo fields. I - Photometric data for selected areas SA141 (South Galactic Pole), SA94 and SA107 In 1981 a joint Swiss-Dutch program was initated to obtain photoelectricphotometry in the Walraven VBLUW system for F-G stars in fields of theBasel halo survey. The aim of this project is to determine temperature,surface gravity, and metal abundance for these stars in order to studythe distribution of the average stellar metallicity as a function ofdistance from the galactic place up to z-distances of about 1 kpc. Thispaper presents the VBLUW data for 112 program stars in Selected AreaSA141 at the South Galactic Pole, 93 stars in SA94 (l = 175 deg, b = -49deg), and 46 stars in SA107 (l = 6 deg, b = +41 deg).
| Transformation equations and other aids for VRI photometry Transformations among VRI systems are commonly beset by Paschen-jumpeffects, for which fully satisfactory allowance has not previously beenmade. This paper describes two new techniques which are based on thework of Gutierrez-Moreno, and which allow fully for the effects of thePaschen jump. Values of E(V-R)/E(B-V) and E(R-I)/E(B-V) are also givenfor the Cousins system for a wide range of temperatures. These and thenew techniques contribute to a set of new transformation relations whichapply for most VRI systems; the status of the remaining systems isreviewed, and future work needed for them is described. Two majorsources of Cousins VRI data underlie the new relations; the consistencyof these sources is reviewed and found to be generally satisfactory,although more work on this question is needed. Finally, three tables oftransformed standard-star and other data are given for the Cousins andJohnson systems, and a description of ways to reproduce the latter ispresented.
| Distances to eclipsing binaries. III - Masses, radii, and absolute magnitudes of 96 stars Distances to, and absolute magnitudes of, 96 components of eclipsingbinaries with well-determined absolute dimensions have been computedusing V-R photometry. The calculations take into account interstellarreddening, which is estimated from existing UBV and uvby-betaphotometry, as well as photometric proximity effects. The resultingabsolute magnitudes, dimensions, and masses are compared with zero-agemain sequences predicted by theory. Theory is in good agreement with theobserved data for stars more massive than the sun if a composition (X,Y, Z) = (0.66 + or - 0.03, 0.303 + or - 0.03, 0.037 + or - 0.005) ischosen. The corresponding helium-to-hydrogen number ratio is 0.115 + or- 0.02, in agreement with previous estimates.

| Equatorial UBVRI photoelectric sequences From 1335 BVRI observations of 189 stars in selected areas 92-115,Landolt's (1973) network of faint UBV standards has been extended to RI. Of these stars, 173 have four or more observations. The (U-B) valuesof Landolt are adopted, and a well-observed equatorial faint-starnetwork is presented on the Johnson UBVRI photometric system.
