Rotational velocities of A-type stars. III. Velocity distributions Aims.A sample of v sin i of B9 to F2-type main sequence single stars hasbeen built from highly homogeneous {v sin i} parameters determined for alarge sample cleansed of objects presenting the Am and Ap phenomenon aswell as of all known binaries. The aim is to study the distributions ofrotational velocities in the mass range of A-type stars for normalsingle objects. Methods: .Robust statistical methods are used torectify the {v sin i} distributions for the projection effect and theerror distribution. The equatorial velocity distributions are obtainedfor about 1100 stars divided in six groups defined by the spectral type, under the assumption of randomly orientated rotational axes. Results: .We show that late B and early A-type main-sequence stars havegenuine bimodal distributions of true equatorial rotational velocitiesprobably due to angular momentum loss and redistribution that the starunderwent before reaching the main sequence. A striking lack of slowrotators is noticed among intermediate and late A-type stars.Full Table [see full text] is only available in electronic form at theCDS via anonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/463/671 Appendices areonly available in electronic form at http://www.aanda.org
| Radial Velocity Studies of Southern Close Binary Stars. I. Winter Systems Radial velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital velocityvariations are presented for nine contact binaries: V1464 Aql, V759 Cen,DE Oct, MW Pav, BQ Phe, EL Aqr, SX Crv, VZ Lib, and GR Vir. For thefirst five of these, our observations are the first available radialvelocity data. For the three remaining radial velocity variables, CE Hyiis a known visual binary, while CL Cet and V1084 Sco are suspected to bemultiple systems in which the contact binary is spectrally dominated byits companion (which itself is a binary in V1084 Sco). Five additionalvariable stars, V872 Ara, BD Cap, HIP 69300, BX Ind, and V388 Pav, areof unknown type, but most are pulsating stars; we give their mean radialvelocities and Vsini.Based on data obtained at the European Southern Observatory.
| A spectroscopic study of southern (candidate) γ Doradus stars. I. Time series analysis We present the results of a spectroscopic study of 37 southern(candidate) γ Doradus stars based on échelle spectra. Theobserved spectra were cross-correlated with the standard templatespectrum of an F0-type star for easier detection of binary and intrinsicvariations. We identified 15 objects as spectroscopic binaries, including 7 new ones, while another 3 objects are binary suspects. Atleast 12 objects show composite spectra. We could determine the orbitalparameters for 9 binaries, of which 4 turned out to be ellipsoidalvariables. For 6 binaries, we estimated the expected time-base of theorbital variations. Clear profile variations were observed for 17objects, pointing towards stellar pulsation. For 8 of them, we haveevidence that the main spectroscopic and photometric periods coincide. Our results, in combination with prior knowledge from the literature, lead to the classification of 10 objects as new bona fide γDoradus stars, 1 object as a new bona fide δ Scuti star, and 8objects as constant stars. Finally, we determined the projectedrotational velocity by two independent methods. The resulting v sin ivalues range from 3 to 135 {km s-1}. For the bona fideγ Doradus stars, the majority has v sin i below 60 {kms-1}.
| Observational results for northern and southern (candidate) gamma Doradus stars . We report on observational results obtained for 78 objects originallyclassified as bona-fide or candidate gamma Doradus stars. For thesouthern objects, we gathered echelle spectra with the CORALIEspectrograph attached to the Euler telescope in 1998-2003 and/orJohnson-Cousins B,V,I_c observations with the MODULAR photometerattached to the 0.5-m SAAO telescope in 1999-2000. For the northernobjects, we obtained Geneva U,B,B_1,B_2,V,V_1,G observations with the P7photometer attached to the 1.2-m Mercator telescope in 2001-2004. Atleast 15 of our objects are binaries, of which 7 are new. For 6binaries, we determined the orbit for the first time. At least 17objects show profile variations and at least 12 objects aremultiperiodic photometric variables. Our results allow us to upgrade 11objects to bona-fide gamma Doradus stars and to downgrade 8 objects toconstant up to the current detection limits. Mode identification isstill ongoing, but so far, only ℓ = 1 and 2 modes have beenidentified.
| Rotational velocities of A-type stars in the northern hemisphere. II. Measurement of v sin i This work is the second part of the set of measurements of v sin i forA-type stars, begun by Royer et al. (\cite{Ror_02a}). Spectra of 249 B8to F2-type stars brighter than V=7 have been collected at Observatoirede Haute-Provence (OHP). Fourier transforms of several line profiles inthe range 4200-4600 Å are used to derive v sin i from thefrequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis of the sampleindicates that measurement error mainly depends on v sin i and thisrelative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 5% onaverage. The systematic shift with respect to standard values fromSlettebak et al. (\cite{Slk_75}), previously found in the first paper,is here confirmed. Comparisons with data from the literature agree withour findings: v sin i values from Slettebak et al. are underestimatedand the relation between both scales follows a linear law ensuremath vsin inew = 1.03 v sin iold+7.7. Finally, thesedata are combined with those from the previous paper (Royer et al.\cite{Ror_02a}), together with the catalogue of Abt & Morrell(\cite{AbtMol95}). The resulting sample includes some 2150 stars withhomogenized rotational velocities. Based on observations made atObservatoire de Haute Provence (CNRS), France. | Rotational velocities of A-type stars. I. Measurement of v sin i in the southern hemisphere Within the scope of a Key Programme determining fundamental parametersof stars observed by HIPPARCOS, spectra of 525 B8 to F2-type starsbrighter than V=8 have been collected at ESO. Fourier transforms ofseveral line profiles in the range 4200-4500 Å are used to derivev sin i from the frequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis ofthe sample indicates that measurement error is a function of v sin i andthis relative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 6%on average. The results obtained are compared with data from theliterature. There is a systematic shift from standard values from\citet{Slk_75}, which are 10 to 12% lower than our findings. Comparisonswith other independent v sin i values tend to prove that those fromSlettebak et al. are underestimated. This effect is attributed to thepresence of binaries in the standard sample of Slettebak et al., and tothe model atmosphere they used. Based on observations made at theEuropean Southern Observatory (ESO), La Silla, Chile, in the frameworkof the Key Programme 5-004-43K. | On the Variability of A3-F0 Luminosity Class III-V Stars I investigate the Hipparcos Satellite photometry of A3-F0 stars ofluminosity classes III-V to learn about their variability and identify afew stars for which further study is desirable.

| The domain of γ Doradus variables in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram 70 new γ Doradus candidates were identified from Hipparcosphotometry, which represents more than a doubling of the presently knownnumber. Selecting the objects with good evidence for multiperiodicity,it is found that these stars, together with bona fide members of theclass, occupy a well-defined region in a colour-magnitude diagram. Thisdomain corresponds to a range of 7200-7700K on the zero-age mainsequence (ZAMS) and 6900-7500K one magnitude above it, which partlyoverlaps with the instability strip of δ Scuti stars. For thefirst time, γ Doradus stars can be discussed as a group. They canbe found over a significant fraction of the main sequence lifetimes forobjects in the relevant temperature range. An upper limit on the surfacemetallicity of γ Doradus stars is apparent, which may guide thesearch for their pulsation driving mechanism. The importance of possibleobjects exhibiting both γ Doradus and δ Scuti-typepulsations is discussed.
| Radial velocities of HIPPARCOS southern B8-F2 type stars Radial velocities have been determined for a sample of B8-F2 type starsobserved by the Hipparcos satellite. Observations were obtained withinthe framework of an ESO key-program. Radial velocities have beenmeasured using a cross-correlation method, the templates being a grid ofsynthetic spectra. The obtained precision depends on effectivetemperature and projected rotational velocity of the star as well as ona possible asymmetry of the correlation peak generally due to secondarycomponents. New spectroscopic binaries have been detected from theseasymmetries and the variability of the measured radial velocity.Simulations of binary and triple systems have been performed. Forbinaries our results have been compared with Hipparcos binary data.Adding the variable radial velocities, the minimum binary fraction hasbeen found 60% for physical systems. Radial velocities have beendetermined for 581 B8-F2 stars, 159 being new. Taking into accountpublished radial velocities, 39% south A-type stars with V magnitudelower than 7.5 have a radial velocity. | The discovery of new gamma Doradus stars from the HIPPARCOS mission We present a classification of 39 new variable stars with spectral typebetween A2 and F8 discovered by Hipparcos with the aim to find new gammaDoradus stars. We have used a multivariate classification scheme andreport the discovery of 14 new gamma Doradus variables among thisunbiased sample. Our results point out the biased nature towards hottemperatures of earlier, ground-based surveys of these variables. Thecoolest star among our sample has an effective temperature only slightlyhotter than 6 000 K. For most of the 14 new gamma Doradus stars, we areable to detect more than one period in the Hipparcos light curve. Themultiperiodicity points towards the presence of high-order g-modes. Inview of the lack of a pulsation mechanism for these objects, wedetermine their position in the HR diagram with respect to the deltaScuti stars.

| Photometric and spectroscopic studies of cool stars discovered in EXOSAT X-ray images. I - Time variability and spectral classification of eight southern stars As part of a larger program to study the optical properties ofserendipitous Exosat sources, optical photometry and low-resolutionspectroscopy are presented for eight southern stars which have beenidentified as optical counterparts of Exosat sources. X-ray fluxvariability has been detected for three of them. In all three cases theoptical counterparts show RS CVn-type variability. Of the remaining fivestars, two are found to be variable in the optical. The high X-rayluminosities inferred from the derived spectroscopic parallaxesindicates that these variable sources are all very active systems, possibly RS CVn binaries. The three nonvariable sources are more likelynormal main-sequences stars, two of them with a rather high level ofcoronal emission.
| The extension of the MK spectral classification system to the intermediate population II F type stars A grid of metal-weak spectral-classification standards is used tosystematically extend the MK spectral-classification system to F-typestars of the intermediate population II. The present method allowsmetal-weak program stars to be compared with standards of similarmetallicity and effective temperature. The results demonstrate that theintermediate population II is very homogeneous. Excellent agreement isobtained between the classifications of the present extended system anduvby-beta photometric results.
